We all know there will be days during autumn where you’ll end up using both the heat pump and the air conditioner within 24 hours. Maintaining suitable temperature can become difficult and may start to increase your energy bill overtime.

We’ve put together some few energy savings tips to help you save energy during Autumn.

1. Be wise when to open windows

On cooler days in Autumn, open blinds and curtains to let the sunlight in and reduce energy usage for heating. Furthermore, on warmer days, open windows to let fresh cool breeze in the home. However, if your family member is allergic to pollen, don’t open the windows for ventilation in the morning hours as the pollen count is at its highest. It might be better to just run the air conditioner or a ventilation system machine than to deal with the family member’s allergy problems.

2. Cook outdoors, if possible

Firing up the BBQ outdoors during a warm autumn afternoon is a perfect time to cook. Cooking outside will prevent you from using the stove or the oven indoors, as they can heat your home quickly. On cold days, use the kitchen. Furthermore, less heat in the house makes the HVAC unit to work less, saving you money from electricity bills.

 3. Autumn Cleaning for Better Energy Efficiency

When you’re doing seasonal cleaning, don’t forget to clean machinery that boosts energy efficiency in your home. For example, if you have a ceiling fan, clean the dust off it. Most importantly, clean the back of your refrigerator.

Dust, dirt, dead insects, and pet hair can accumulate behind the fridge can reduce proper airflow through the coils, encouraging your refrigerator to work much harder to preserve your food and drinks in cold conditions.

For average NZ households, refrigerators consume 10% of all energy. Cleaning behind the fridge will not only make the refrigerator operate more efficiently, but will make a big difference in your monthly electricity bill.

4. Get your HVAC Maintained

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system should be serviced annually to work efficiently. Don’t wait to maintain the systems until winter arrives. Get HVAC maintenance during autumn, as you might be surprised that your HVAC isn’t working on the first day of winter. If you avoid these problems, you may end up paying thousands in repairs. All of this can be prevented from regular maintenance.

JSR’s regular HVAC maintenance includes coil cleaning and testing the refrigerant charge to ensure your HVAC system is operating efficiently as possible. Regular maintenance will help your systems avoid breakdowns during winter, allowing your family to use HVAC systems safely.
